The Eee PC must be extremely popular. At least Asus thinks so because it has fully booked Chunghwa Picture Tubes’ (CPT) 8.9″ LCD panel capacity. The Eee PC 900/901 ultra-portable notebook PCs sport an 8.9″ LCD with a pixel format of 1024 x 600, perfect for on-the-go web surfing. CPT and AU Optronics (AUO) are the two panel suppliers for the Eee PC 900.
Asus has already completely booked AUO’s 8.9″ LCD capacity. It is estimated that CPT will ship about 1 million 8.9″ LCD panels in 2008 with AUO shipping about 4 million units. AUO is also shipping its 8.9″ LCD panel to Acer.
Kenmos Technology is the sole Eee PC 900 backlight unit (BLU) supplier and like CPT and AUO is basking in success due to the popularity of the Eee PC.
The current 8.9″ will likely shift to a slight larger 10″-segment in the near future. 10.1″ is likely to be manufactured by AUO, Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), LG Display and Samsung. CPT and Innolux will probably opt for 10.2-inch panel production. I would put my money down on the AUO, CMO, LG Display and Samsung camp since if the Eee PC ultra-portable notebook PCs continue to surge in popularity, Asus will need a bountiful supply of 10″ LCDs.
