Note: As far as I can tell the XBR 7 and the XBR 8 external design is similar if not identical.
Sony‘s XBR 7 series LCD TVs come in two sizes, one is the KDL-40XBR7 and the other is the much larger KDL-70XBR7. The other difference between the two, other than the size, is that the KDL-70XBR7 uses the BRAVIA Engine 2 PRO and the KDL-40XBR7 uses the BRAVIA Engine 2 EX. I don’t know the specifics, but I am guessing that the BRAVIA Engine 2 PRO is the more advanced version since the XBR 8 series use that engine.
The overall design of the XBR 7 series seems to look fairly similar to the XBR 8 (KDL-46XBR8, KDL-55XBR8) series. Although they might be similar externally, internally they are a world apart mainly due to the TRILUMINOS RGB LED backlight in the XBR 8 series. Also the XBR 7 series, including the KDL-40XBR7, makes use of a wide color gamut CCFL (WCG-CCFL) to improve the color gamut. The ACE technology will improve the contrast ratio but it will not be able to compete with the LED backlight and the local dimming capabilities of the XBR 8 series. Of course, you’ll need to pay dearly for those technologies.
