Dell‘s Precision M6400 is a powerful 17″ mobile workstation. The 17″ wide TFT LCD sports a LED backlight and generates a color gamut of 100% NTSC. Could the LCD be LG Display’s recently announced 17.1″ notebook PC LCD panel sporting a RGB LED backlight? The specifications look to be similar.
There are two versions of the 17″ LCD with a LED backlight:
1. 17″ WUXGA RGB LED Back-Lit Display (1920×1200) Resolution
2. 17″ WUXGA RGB LED Edge to Edge Back-Lit Display (1920×1200) Resolution
“Edge to Edge”… I wonder what that means. Anyone have a clue? Either way, this is the first notebook PC to feature a RGB LED backlight and will spur other companies to follow suit and very quickly. With a RGB LED backlight, you’re looking at a wider color gamut so colors are more vibrant. When the display is accurately calibrated, you’ll finally be able truly get “what you see is what you get” or WYSIWYG.
Uh oh. When I click on ‘Customize’ I only get the 17″ WXGA+ (1440 x 900) or 17″ WUXGA (1920 x 1200) options. The regular non-LED backlight 17″ WUXGA LCD is a $159 option over the 17″ WXGA+. But I don’t see the other two mentioned above with RGB LED backlighting.
$399. That’s the price you’ll need to fork over if you want the 1GB NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M. That’s about the price of some of the new netbooks!
