On December 4, 2008, Costco announced November sales results. For the four weeks that ended November 30, 2008, net sales decreased 3% Y/Y from $5.72 billion in 2007 to $5.55 billion in 2008. For the first thirteen weeks ended November 30, 2008, Costco’s net sales increased 3% Y/Y from $16.98 billion in 2007 to $17.52 billion in 2008.
For just the US, 4 weeks declined 2% Y/Y and 13 weeks increased 3% Y/Y. If you exclude the negative impacts from gasoline deflation and foreign exchange (primarily in CN, UK and Korea) the pictures looks a bit better: net sales for 4 weeks increased 1% Y/Yand 13 weeks increase 3% Y/Y. The interesting part of the announcement was that TV sales were up 50% Y/Y in the 4 weeks ending in November 30, 2008. There are many TV brands that are sold at Costco including Sharp, Philips, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, Sceptre, Westinghouse Digital, etc.
