Sharp‘s AQUOS LC-65D64U is, how shall I say it, a monster. The LC-65D64U is a 65″ 1080p-capable LCD TV sporting a pixel format of 1920 x 1080. The contrast ratio is a very decent 2000:1 while the brightness of 450 cd/m2 is plenty bright. In most cases you will need to turn down the brightness, especially if you’re watching at night. The viewing angles of 176/176 might be slightly less than the ones you see for Samsung or Sony, but those specs do not mean Sharp is inferior. It actually means that Sharp is a bit more conservative in measuring contrast ratio. The 4ms response time is quite fast. The only thing missing is 120Hz that dramatically reduces motion blur. Sharp claims that its “Enhanced Black Level provides the deepest, most accurate blacks of any flat panel TV” sounds a bit exaggerated. The only reason why I say that is because of Sony’s KDL-55XBR8. You see, the KDL-55XBR8 has a RGB LED backlight that allows it to perform a technology called local dimming that significantly enhances contrast ratio. Sony claims 1,000,000:1 (that’s one million)! I would recommend going to an actual store to compare. At the reviews are very favorable for the 65″ behemoth from Sharp except for one that reports noxious fumes! That particular one must be defective because all others are reporting 5 stars out of 5.
