lenovo_thinkpad_w700dsLenovo has come up with something quite unique. The ThinkPad W700 was unique enough with a built in Wacom digitizer and integrated color calibration. But the W700ds version is even more different. The W700ds has two screens. One is your ordinary 17″ TFT LCD with a CCFL backlight sporting a 1920 x 1200 pixel format. The second display is a 10.2″ TFT LCD arranged in portrait mode. So the pixel format is 768 x 1280. The 10.2″ also has a LED backlight, which was probably necessary since it will have to be very thin to fold back in somewhere. I would be very interested in knowing how the 10.2″ LCD slides or folds back into the main unit. the extra screen real estate is welcome but I think it adds a bit too much in terms of complexity, weight, cost, etc. I would much rather have a 17″ LCD with a 2560 x 1600 pixel format. The regular single LCD W700 is a whopping $2586.99 at Amazon.com. I wonder how much more this W700ds beast is going to cost; probably north of $3000!

Update 2008.12.22 12:24PM PST: There are more pictures of the W700ds and a video of the 10.2″ sliding out and then back into the massive 17″ LCD enclosure. I am not sure if this is the finished version since the back of the 17″ LCD is bare.

And here is another picture of the monstrous W700ds:
