On February 3, 2009, Dolby Laboratories and SIM2 Multimedia announced the new SIM2 Solar Series high-dynamic range (HDR) enabled LCD display featuring Dolby Vision. The SIM2 Solar Series feature a Dolby Vision 47″ LCD. Dolby Vision has a proprietary algorithm that manages the LEDs in the backlight: each LED is controlled individually based on the image on the display. This is unique in that LEDs in all other LED backlights are controlled in a number of groups around 12-16.
The Dolby Vision 47″ LCD sports a LED backlight with 2,206 LEDs. With those LEDs brightness is an unheard (or rather unseen) of 4000 cd/m2! Contrast ratio? Infinite! Colors will be brilliant as each color will have a pallete of 65,536 shades thanks to 16-bit processing for HDR signals. The HDR process involves analyzing the standard 8-bit video signal and expanding it to 16 bits and then calculating the backlight drive level for each LED. The black level in a Dolby Vision LCD display is -0.001 cd/m2, much lower than typical levels of -0.05 to -0.25 cd/m2. Find out more here: “How Dolby HDR Video Works“.
