ATI is planning a price cut for its Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB from $199 to $149. AMD will position the HD 4870 to compete against NVIDIA’s GTS 250 with 1GB. In reviews, the HD 4870 part has come out ahead of the GTX 260. The HD 4850 with 512MB will be reduced to just $129 and go head-to-head with NVIDIA’s GTS 250 with 512MB. In just one month, ATI will be introducing its Radeon 4890, a boosted version of the 4870. A quick search on Amazon reveals the Diamond 4870PE51GDI ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 1GB GDDR5 going for $296.99. And for the slightly slower but still quite capable HD 4850 part, MSI’s R4850 with 512MB is going for just $161.99 at Amazon. ATI’s Radeon HD 4870 was a compelling buy prior to the price drop. With the additional $50 drop in price the value that the HD 4870 brings to the table will be hard to beat. Same goes for the HD 4850.
