LG Display announced that the company has commenced mass production of LCD panels from its G8 LCD fabrication plant located in Paju, South Korea on March 9, 2009. The G8 fab will focus on manufacturing 32″, 47″ and 55″ LCD TV panels. The G8 motherglass size that LG Display is using is 2200 x 2500mm. The company invested KRW2.5 trillion in the fab excluding building costs.
Initial monthly capacity will be 20,000 glass substrates and ramp up to the current design capacity of 83,000 glass substrate input per month by the end of 2009. The ramp schedule will, of course, depend on market conditions.
Part of the reason why LG Display went ahead with expanding its LCD panel production capacity geared for LCD TVs is the large demand that has been created due to China’s “Home Appliances to the Countryside” policy. Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), a Taiwan-based LCD manufacturer, reported that February shipments of large-sized LCD panels grew 23.2% M/M to 4.2M unit.
