Intel has developed a SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) Accelerator that improves graphics performance on portable devices like smartphones. SIMD works by executing multiple computing instructions at once so graphic image updates are completed faster. The great thing about Intel’s SIMD Accelerator is that not only is graphics performance improved the energy consumption is about 10 times less. Intel states that this is a research project “aimed at enhancing future Intel products” but I can see how this development can improve a whole lot of other devices currently available that could use a bump in GPU performance and longer battery life. Imagine the iPhone having even better graphics capability and lasting longer on a charge. Sounds good to me.
