OLED-Info is reporting there is a rumor that Sony might unveil its XEL-2 OLED TV, the sucessor to the world’s first commercially available OLED TV, the XEL-1, at IFA 2009. IFA 2009 will be held in Berlin from September 4 through 9.
XEL-2 There isn’t an official product number since this is a rumor but Ron over at OLED-Info is calling it the XEL-2. Sounds good to me. So how big is the XEL-2 to going to be? Either 21″ or 27″. My bet is that it’ll be a 21″ since it is much easier to manufacture compared to a much larger 27″.
21″ OLED TV Just last week, Sony unveiled a 21″ OLED TV prototype sporting a 1366 x 768 pixel format with a thickness of just 1.4mm. That is razor thin. The pixel format is a bit of a downer since you can only see 720p but baby steps. I’m sure the size will get bigger and the number pixels will grow to an eventual 1920 x 1080. The contrast ratio? 1,000,000:1. Sony announced that it will be releasing a new OLED TV by May 2009.
