Jessica E. Vascellaro, reporting for The Wall Street Journal:
Google Inc. has designed a cellphone it plans to sell directly to consumers as soon as next year… The phone is called the Nexus One and is being manufactured for Google by HTC Corp…. The move could alienate wireless carriers and handset makers that offer Android phones and do not want to compete with Google.
Google will completely control the experience via hardware (HTC’s Nexus One), operating system (Android) and software (a bunch of Google apps) and will be able to flex its muscle and compete head-to-head with Apple, who also has complete control over its iPhone experience. Finally, some real competition. Now if we could just eliminate the wireless carrier factor. Source: The Wall Street Journal via Daring Fireball
