Sony RX1 Zeiss Sonnar 35 mm f/2 vs. Leica Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH

Lloyd Chambers:

It is my expectation that the Zeiss Sonnar 35/2 will outperform the Leica 35/2 Summicron-M ASPH at ƒ/2 and ƒ/2.8 (and perhaps ƒ/4), and match it at ƒ/5.6 and ƒ/8. I am not basing this on the fantasy-land Sony MTF charts. But we shall see— real camera lenses (not lens designs) have to be built to high tolerances to pan out.

The Leica Summicron-M 35 mm f/2 ASPH lens by itself costs about US$3000, which is more than the $2800 Sony RX1 which comes with the non-removable Zeiss Sonnar 35 mm f/2 lens. If the RX1 optics merely match the Leica Summicron-M, Sony will have accomplished something extraordinary: an exceptionally capable and remarkably affordable full frame compact camera.
